Kyle O’Donoghue on his Arctic Expedition

2041′s videographer, Kyle O’Donoghue is now on day 45 of his Arctic Expedition. Communications are difficult but Kyle and his team have done a great job staying in contact and sharing their expedition experience on their blog. Today we were lucky enough to get a message from him.

Greetings Rob and the team from 81 North and the start of the Arctic Ocean. So far our expedition has traveled 45 days and and 450 miles with our trusty 4 dogs. We have had amazing wildlife encounters with polar bears and wolves in this stunning wilderness. However roughly 3 trillion barrels of oil and natural gas lie beneath the area we have traveled and as the race for the arctic intensifies it will come under threat. This confirms to me how important the work of 2041 and all of you is in making sure these last special places remain as they are. Thanks to all of you who have followed the expedition. Carry on!

All of us at 2041 wish Kyle and his team a safe adventure and look forward to his return home.

Join the Global Himalayan Expedition & ‘Third Pole’ E-base Installation

2041 and Robert Swan would like to invite you to the Inaugural Edition of the Global Himalayan Expedition to be held in Ladakh, India from 11  -22 August, 2013. The Global Himalayan Expedition is an initiative by the IAE -2012 Alumni from India.

This Holistic Himalayan Experience besides stretching across pure adventure would also involve cultural connect with the local communities and their activities which are focused on sustainability.

During this expedition the team would also be setting up the third Educational Base (E-Base) in Ladakh following E-base Antarctica and the Pench E base on a tiger reserve. Powered fully on renewable energy, this Educational Base would be known as the Third Pole E- Base.  Using a passive solar heating design, ‘Third Pole E-base’ would be it warm even in winters and be earthquake resistant.

Joining the Global Himalayan Expedition will be the  “Cycle for water” team (cycleforwater.com) from Netherlands who also came on the 2012 IAE Expedition. Michael and Joost of Cylce for Water cycled on bicycles made of bamboo shoots from Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina to raise awareness on water related issues and then went onwards to the Antarctic with Robert Swan. Being an expedition which focuses on reinforcing the message of sustainability, it also connects with the locals of Ladakh, whose lifestyle is a shining example of living on the edge.

Success at Tetra Pak’s Your Cartons. My Classroom.

Robert Swan discussing Your Carton. My Classroom

Robert Swan discussing Your Carton. My Classroom

Robert Swan joined Tetra Pak and TERI on Sunday 21 April, 2013 at DLF Mall in Delhi for promoting “Your Cartons. My Classroom”. Impressed by the efforts throughout Delhi schools—which recycled over 50,000 Tetra Pak cartons—Robert participated in Sunday’s event with the Tetra Pak Cartons that he personally collected. With an emphasis on recycling in India, Robert inspired the next generation of leaders to put sustainability into action. Several Delhi schools were also highlighted for winning trophies thorough Tetra Pak’s recycling initiatives. Additionally, Robert celebrated by pledging his ongoing support for Tetra Pak’s recycling programs.

Happy Earth Day 2013

We would like to wish everyone a very happy Earth Day! Here at 2041, we like to think of every day as a day to practice sustainable actions and make this world the way it should be, clean, sustainable and thriving.  We like to use days like this as not a single day to make a difference, but most importantly, a a date to reflect and plan. What have you done to help protect the environment since the last Earth Day? What will you do to make our world better than what it is today over the course of the next year. Whatever you do, begin it now, make a difference, lead and get others involved. Change begins now and it begins with you.

Below are some examples of the projects our alumni members are involved in, year round and on this special day.

Raj Phukan, IAE 2013

Raj celebrated Earth Day in India, interacting with students from two schools, showing them films on climate change & global warming and releasing a Chinese Pangolin rescued from certain death.

Janet Morris, IAE 2011

Janet will be presenting to families and kids at Hewlett Packard for “Bring Your Inventor to Work Day.”   This is Janet’s third year of presenting her virtual expedition to Antarctica.  She does a great job of bringing Antarctica to life for these parents and their children by having them internalize that we are all citizens of Antarctica.

Scott Herington, IAE 2012

Scott of KAUST School  focused on their project to rebuild the damaged/ devastated mangroves along the coast.  Mangrove Forests have been found in over 110 countries. The bark of the underwater roots of Avicennia, Marina mangroves can provide food for small crabs.  The crabs tunnels, in turn, put oxygen in the soil that the roots can use.  Small fish can find shelter in mangrove roots and birds can shelter in the branches. Nutrients left behind that fall to the soil can be used by the mangroves.

Todd Latham, IAE 2011

Todd Latham of Toronto, Canada hosted a big party to celebrate Earth Day, bringing together students, academia, media, professionals and government in support of clean water.  All of the proceeds will directly support WaterCan’s work on water and sanitation projects in East Africa.   More details here:  http://watercanada.net/bluebash/

Kim Williams, IAE 2012

Kim is using funds from her “Project Green Award” that Sacramento City Unified School District won in 2012 to create a mural for their school garden. The mural is focused on things that reflect our school community, and at the center of the mural is the green theme: recycle. An image of a globe with dream catcher represents our dream for a healthy and green planet!  And of course, the memorable quote by Robert Swan.

Robert Swan spent his day at the Tetra Pak/ TERI,  “Your Carton My Classroom” event in India promoting the upcycle project of turning cartons into usable school furniture. While there, he was able to meet up with many Alumni Members including, Chandini Chhabra, Paras Loomba, Hasita Bhammar, Supriya Singh and Seema Sharma.

What will you be doing over the next year?

Your Cartons. My Classroom! with Tetra Pak and TERI

Your Cartons. My Classroom! Follow Robert as he promotes recycling not just for the environment but also education! This is an initiative started by Tetra Pak and TERI to recycle empty Tetra Pak cartons into school furniture for under-privileged students across India. The event celebrates the collection, recycling & awareness efforts that have been taking place throughout the year and will take place in Delhi on 21 April 2013. If you are in Delhi, your participation can help provide chairs and study desks to students from six different schools and this will enable a better environment for these young kids to study. Please collect as many cartons from friends, family, neighbours and your society and bring them to Robert Swan at DLF Place, Saket, New Delhi where we will recycle and convert them into desks, shelves & books. What’s more? You can get a personalized Robert Swan signed coffee mug to thank you for your support. For more information, please visit: www.protectswhatsgood.in

On our most recent 2013 International Antarctic Expedition, we were joined by Seema Sharma as a representative of Tetra Pak and TERI. See her campaign and experience on her blog at Protect What’s Good- Seema’s Blog
